  1. If a person has been abused in the past, but now it has stopped, should they still report it?
Yes, it doesn’t matter how long ago it happened, if you’ve been the victim of violence you should report it. If you don’t report it, the person who hurt you could hurt you again or they might hurt someone else. Also, by reporting it, you can get the help and support you need and won’t have to go through it alone.

  2. What if a bully finds out that I reported them and hurts me even more for telling?
Of course, bullies will threaten to hurt you if you report them because that gives them more power over you and power is what they are trying to get. The law requires that your school protect your safety. A school cannot to anything to keep you safe it you don’t report that you are being bullied. Things the school can do are: provide counseling to you, suspend or expel the bully, change your schedule, and teach bullies relationship skills.

  3. If I report bullying or harassment, will I be called a snitch?
Snitching on someone means you are trying to get them in trouble. When you report bullying or harassment it is because you are trying to keep yourself safe.

  4. If someone hits me first, will I get in trouble for hitting them back? Isn’t that self-defense?
Fighting at school will get you in trouble. It doesn’t matter who threw the first punch , when you hit back, you are involved in a fight. If someone wants to fight, there are things you can try to keep yourself out of trouble: get away from the person; find an adult; yell, “Stop hitting me!” as loud as you can; remind the other person that fighting has serious consequences; stay calm.

  10. One day when I was walking home from school with friends some boys from our school came up to where we were sitting and started kicking the bench. We told them to stop and they didn’t. Then they started to make fun of us. I know what they were doing was wrong, but I don’t know what to do about it.
