“Our students, teachers, parents and staff have come to see Project PAVE’s programs as a valuable resource to our school community… [to] increase safety, responsibility, awareness and prevention and to link victims of violence to much-needed help.”
Stephen Wera, Columbine Elementary School Principal

“She had such a tough time making it to school last year, each day was a struggle.  Now look at her!  She’s here, has friends, and comes into my office regularly to complain about school with a huge smile on her face.”
un-named school administrator, talking about a PAVE client

“Everyday that goes by, I seem to feel more comfortable with talking to someone [about what happened to me]…It helps to know that you understand...[Y]ou are making me feel really comfortable. So thank you very much.”
“Maria,” 7th grade student

Our School-Based Counselors provide services in schools that have very limited resources and are not able to provide full-time counselors.  Were it not for a PAVE School-Based Counselor in their buildings, our partner schools would have very limited ability to meet the mental health needs of their students or provide targeted violence prevention

PAVE counselors working in our partner schools serve children and youth who have been touched by relationship violence by building relationships in classes and activities and through individualized in-school counseling.  Our experienced counselors work one-on-one and in groups with these students to help them heal from their experiences, gain confidence, build skills, and improve their functioning.

Through violence prevention education, students actively learn to recognize relationship violence warning signs, reject bullying and in an age-appropriate way, prevent sexual assault. To provide a lasting support system for students, PAVE partners with teachers, administrators, other school employees and parents in these kids’ lives.  We work with schools to create a climate where every child feels safe and valued.  With families, we conduct workshops and discussion groups where caregivers can learn about and intervene in bullying and relationship violence.

Whittier Elementary School (ece-7, Denver)
PAVE is excited about its first year of partnership with Whittier! Meghan Kearney, MSW, LSW is the full-time School-Based counselor assigned to work with the Whittier community.

Students attend one-on-one and group counseling sessions focused on emotional, sexual and/or physical abuse within their families and relationships of trust. Our professional counselors develop age-appropriate, individual treatment plans to rebuild students’ confidence and develop positive communication and relating skills.  When possible, we involve parents in therapy to improve family functioning.

If students have especially severe mental health issues, we refer them to our more intensive clinical services at through PAVE Counseling Services, or to a partner agency that also specializes in relationship violence.

Bullying is a big problem at most schools, according to the teachers, administrators, counselors, parents and students PAVE has worked with for years.  In 2005, Project PAVE brought the internationally acclaimed Olweus Bullying Prevention Program to two of our partner schools (Columbine & North) as a part of the Colorado Trust’s Bullying Prevention Initiative, designed to help schools and community-based organizations prevent bullying and related behaviors among children and youth. Our staffers help school staff, students and their families reduce bullying problems, prevent more bullying, improve student-to-student relations and make school a safer and more positive place for kids to learn and grow.

Project PAVE staff members work closely with our partner schools around issues of violence.  Through policy revision, staff training, resource contacts, and regular interaction, administrators and staff are given additional tools to help them move their school in a violence-free direction.

PAVE’s School-Based Counselors work directly with teachers to address situational and wide-spread issues that detract from student performance like bullying behavior and discipline management.  Our counselors are “part of the team” at their respective schools and assist teachers with resources, classroom presentations, observations, and regular discussions.
